Memes are snippets of content that get sent round the internet, spreading from person to person and may eventually embed themselves into a particular subculture or even popular culture. They're beautiful, they're annoying, they're persistent and one day they'll fuel our nostalgia.

'Someone set us up the bomb!' This comes from some badly translated video game from the early '90s called Zero Wing. You'll see 'All your base' all over the internet if you look carefully enough.

Badger Badger Badger

A looped animation about badgers, a mushroom and a snake. If you leave it playing long enough the sound and video are no longer in synch. This inspired all sorts of spin offs and was even combined with Bananaphone a couple of times.

Bananaphone

This meme was taken from children songwriter Raffi's 1994 album and found its way into loads of flash spin-offs. Don't listen for too long, or you'll never get it out of your head.

Chocolate Rain

Tay Zonday sings about drugs. Or is it racism? Or is it incontinence? Or is it all of the above? He made a nice career out of it too, with a Dr Pepper commercial.

One of the first memes that ever made a big wave. This thing was going when gifs were cool.

LOL cats

The idea is really simple. Take a picture of a cat looking stupid and poorly photoshop a caption on it. Hours of fun. While this isn't quite as

I don't what Burger King were thinking when they came up with this marketing idea, but it's quite fun. The chicken will do most things you tell it to.

Tourist Guy

Some bloke photoshopped a picture of him on the top of the World Trade Center Towers so you could see one of the approaching planes over his shoulder. It went viral and all of a sudden it appeared all over the place (well, mostly on b3ta) and then things just went quiet.

Yatta!

VeryLowSodium's first great hit. Yatta was weird to begin with, but then he made this and things got even stranger.
